A great time in Mendon, Massachusetts

If you’re looking for something a little different to do with your sweetheart or the family, look no further than a trip to Mendon, Ma. Mendon is a small city about an hour southwest of Boston off of route 495. Mendon is home to the Southwick’s Zoo and The Mendon Twin Drive-In.
You can visit the zoo during the day and see such beautiful animals as lions, giraffes, kangaroos, and the always popular blue tongue skink. There are many more animals, children’s rides, shows, and exhibits to enjoy. There is a petting zoo, elephant rides, the skyfari sky ride, and best of all-the deer forest. At the deer forest you can put your quarters in the machine for deer food, and then feed them by hand. The deer roam free here and they come right up to you looking to be fed. The Mendon Zoo is a place any animal lover must visit.

After you get out of the zoo, it’s time to head over to The Mendon Twin Drive-In. There are 2 screens here, each showing a double feature. Normally one screen will show 2 movies for kids and the other screen will show 2 movies for adults. It costs $25 for a car to get in, no matter how many people are in the car. You can bring your own food if you want, and they have a snack bar with tacos, hamburgers, clam chowder, ice cream, and much more. Before the first movie starts at dusk, you can throw around a football or frisbee, or just sit back and relax. You can sit in your car and listen to the movie on your stereo, or bring a boombox and a lawn chair and chill out in the open air. Bring a cooler and have a couple beers, but be discreet.

Seeing a double feature after going to the zoo is a long day, but it’s a lot of fun. There are very few drive-ins left, and having one next to another wonderful attraction is even more rare. This combination makes Mendon one of the hidden jewels of Massachusetts.

The Southwick’s Zoo opens for the season on April 13th.

  1. That does sound like a great day. I didn’t even realize there were any drive-ins around anymore.
