20. Celtic Pride(1996)
Ok, so it’s not a good movie. But it’s about the Boston Celtics and it does have Dan Ackroyd.

19. Southie(1999) 
Tense drama about South Boston thugs and starring Boston’s own Donnie Wahlberg. The film’s ending was shot during The Saint Patrick’s Day parade in South Boston. 

18. The Firm(1993)
Filmed partially in Boston, including at the Copley Plaza Hotel, The Firm is a good little thriller starring Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, and Holly Hunter. Oh, and that crazy Tom Cruise. 

17. Fever Pitch(2005)
The Farrelly brothers directed this romantic comedy centered around the Boston Red Sox. Much of the filming was done at Fenway Park, during actual games, in 2004-the same year the Sox won their first World Series in 86 years.

16. Coma(1978)
Coma is a solid thriller set and made in Boston starring Michael Douglas.

15. The Spanish Prisoner(1997)
Written and Directed by David Mamet, The Spanish Prisoner is an excellent and underrated thriller starring Steve Martin. Boston sets include Logan Airport, The North End, and Rowe’s Wharf.

14. Monument Ave.(1998)
Monument Ave. is a gritty and engaging crime drama filmed mostly in the Charlestown section of Boston. The film stars Worcester’s Denis Leary, Boston’s Lenny Clarke, and has a cameo  appearance from Boston Bruin great Cam Neely.

Ted is one of the highest grossing comedies of all time, and stars Boston’s Mark Wahlberg and a Teddy bear.

Denzel Washington won an Academy Award in this great film also starring Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick. Filming locations include the South End and Boston Common

This baseball classic starring Kevin Costner was partially filmed in Boston, including historic Fenway Park.

10. Blown Away(1994)
Filmed entirely in Boston, this entertaining thriller stars Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, and Forest Whitaker. A good film to watch if you want to see the city.

9. The Verdict(1982)
The great Paul Newman stars in one of the best courtroom dramas ever made. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including best actor(Newman), best director(Sidney Lumet), and best picture, and was filmed all over Boston.

8. The Boondock Saints(1999)
Set in Boston, but only partially filmed here, The Boondock Saints is an original and entertaining action film featuring a hilarious performance from Willem Dafoe.

7. The Friends of Eddie Coyle(1973)
Set and filmed in Boston and suburban Boston, this film is somewhat a forgotten classic. Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle star in yet another crime drama from the list.

6. The Last Detail(1973)
Jack Nicholson is brilliant as a foul mouthed sailer in charge of escorting a young man, played by Randy Quaid, to the brig to serve an eight year sentence for a petty crime. Nicholson’s character is determined to show the late teen a good time, before he does his time. Hearing Jack Nicholson yell out the line, “you’re gonna have a f*****g beer!”, is awesome. Set locations include Boston Common and the Combat Zone.

5. Gone Baby Gone(2007)
Set and filmed in Boston and various suburbs, Gone Baby Gone is a great crime film directed by Ben Affleck. The film stars Ben’s brother Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Amy Ryan, who was nominated for an Academy Award.

4. Good Will Hunting(1997)
This fantastic film starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Robin Williams, garnered an incredible nine Academy Award nominations, including best picture of the year. It won two awards-best supporting actor for Williams, and best screenplay for Damon and Affleck. The film is set in Boston and partially filmed here as well.

3. The Town(2010)
Ben Affleck directs and stars in another great Boston crime film, this time focusing on Charlestown bank and armored car robbers. Jeremy Renner was nominated for best supporting actor in this set in Boston heist film featuring locations such as Charlestown, the North End, and Fenway Park.

2. Mystic River(2003)
Clint Eastwood directed this epic film starring Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Bacon. Penn and Robbins took home Oscars for best actor and best supporting actor respectively. This film was set in, and filmed in Boston, and is one of the most powerful films you will ever see.

1. The Departed(2006)
Completely set in Boston, and filmed in Boston and New York, The Departed features an all star cast including Cambridge’s Matt Damon, and Boston’s Mark Wahlberg. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning four, including for best picture, and best director(Martin Scorsese). The Jack Nicholson character is loosely based on Whitey Bulger, the infamous Boston mobster.

  2. I thought about The Social Network but figured it was more Cambridge than Boston. Nitpicking I know. Jaws was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard but not Boston as far as I know.
