Why did The Boston Phoenix close?

Before the Internet, The Boston Phoenix was perhaps the number one source connecting clients with escorts in Boston. The Boston Phoenix was not a free newspaper until the mid nineties. Before The Phoenix was a free publication, escorts could advertise with them at a very reasonable rate. This is because they made substantial revenue from selling the newspaper. The Phoenix and the phonebook were basically the only places to look for escorts, and business was good. Eventually, with a decline in readers, The Phoenix became a free publication. But they need revenue from somewhere,  so advertiser rates skyrocketed. With so many escorts and escort agencies turning to the Internet to advertise, the potential clients quickly followed suit. It was no longer worth paying to advertise in that newspaper, as the cost had become way too high. The phonebook would appear to be next.
